July Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the Meeting of Shenandoah Valley Gem and Mineral Society
Meeting date: July 8, 2024
Wowee! It was a hot evening for our annual club picnic - around 90 degrees, so we moved it inside. Thanks, Kelly, for providing a cool place. Thank you especially to Charlie for providing all the paper goods. There were approximately 30 members and family sitting around talking and eating. Thanks to all who brought food & drinks - it was a feast! 🍗🥗 🧀🍒
Jack had posters and fliers for the show to distribute. Debbie reminded everyone to sign up to help at the show, and gave out door prizes.
We are in the process of searching for a new club treasurer. 💰Our current treasurer, Scott, has moved to NC with a new job. He would be happy to explain the duties to the new volunteer. Please consider stepping into this important role. We cannot have a club if there is no treasurer.
Check my previous email for volunteer opportunities for the show at Augusta EXPO Sep 20 to 22, with set up on the 19th. I have received only 7 names so far. This is our 56th annual show, and we have around 40 vendors under contract. We will be in all three buildings at EXPO, so we do need quite a few people to assist, especially with collecting money for tickets. 🎟️The lines get long sometimes, and there needs to be at least 3 people per time slot to take money.
Setting up and taking down 200+ tables is also quite a job. Please let me know when you can help. THANKS A BUNCH! 🙏 It does take a village to make the show a success.
Last year we had 2298 visitors, which included 40 club members that volunteered a total of over 650 hours, and 22 club members that attended, but did/could not help. (several of our members did demonstrations and/or are vendors and could not perform volunteer duties).
Another thing to be thinking about is preparing a display case. Our mission is to educate the public about the wonders and uses of minerals and gems. There are cases that can be picked up at our shop. If you need information about how to make one, I can send it to you.
Our next meeting is August 12 at 7 pm at the Bridgewater Baptist Church. Our program will be presented by a member of the local archaeology club and he will talk about flint knapping.
We are asking you to bring a mineral that begins with an "A" for our display table.
The shop is open on Saturday, August 17 from 9 am to noon.August 12: Regular meeting at 7 pm at the church. The program will be on flint-knapping. George Lott (from local archaeology club) will do flint knapping -- {Pick up cases/begin preparation for show display cases}
Sep 9: 7 pm. Planning for the show. Program to be determined.
Sep 19: Set up for the show at EXPO
Sep 20-22: The 56th Annual Gem & Mineral Show (Set up Thursday 9/19) Show Friday - Sunday (20th -22nd) Mark your calendars and get ready to have some fun helping!!!
Lots of WONDERFUL volunteers making our 56th annual Gem. Mineral & Jewelry Show a resounding success!! I am already making a list of volunteers, so please let me know when you can help. Thanks!
