January 2023 Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Meeting of Shenandoah Valley Gem and Mineral Society
Meeting date: January 9, 2023

1. The meeting began at 7 pm and lasted until about 8:30. More than 12 people attended, including one new member, Ed Myers.

2. Kelly Lane welcomed everyone to the church hall, which looked especially nice because of the decorations from a recent wedding. A new big-screen TV has been installed in the hall that
might give better color for our future Presentations.

3. Mike Pabst announced that the Trap Rock books from FMVA were available for sale.
a. 12 books have been distributed so far, leaving 38 in the box.

b. Received $90 so far for the 12 books. 9x$5 + 3x$15 = $90

c. Books will be available again at the next meeting. $5 for those who helped at the show, and $15 for other club members. (Retail $35) Please bring exact change in cash.

4. 6 small spheres from Mike Herrick were available for sale. Two rutilated quartz spheres were sold. These rutilated quartz spheres were spectacular when propped on top of a small flashlight.

5. Jack and Jill and other members brought finished jewelry and rough stones and mineral specimens for sale and display. Tom Tucker helped to identify unlabeled specimens.

6. Mike Pabst volunteered to present a show on “Minerals of Sweden” at the February 13 meeting.

7. Charley Rhoads announced that the lapidary shop will be open this Saturday, January 14, from 9 till noon, at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 364 Bridge Avenue, Waynesboro, Virginia 22980. Come to the rear of the church.

Next meeting:

Our next meeting is February 13th, 2023 at Bridgewater Baptist Church in Dayton VA.

FYI - If Rockingham County Public Schools Schools are closed due to inclement weather on a meeting day, our meeting will be canceled. The club secretary will try to send out an email ASAP that day, and an announcement will be posted on the club’s Facebook page and web site.
Thanks for your understanding; we want everyone to be safe!

Field Trips: We are not planning any field trips any time soon, but if anyone knows of places to collect in small groups, let the club secretary know and they can send out the info.

Looking ahead:
The lapidary shop will be open the Saturday following a regular meeting. (See Events At A Glance for a calendar view). Charlie & Jack can assist you. Open from 9 am to noon. This is a small enclosed space; please follow whatever COVID protective guidelines you think appropriate.

There are several slab saws and trim saws. Keep in mind that safety is a priority, and wear closed toe shoes, safety glasses, with no loose hair or long sleeves. Children must be supervised and closely monitored to insure they are safely using the equipment. Check
this page to see what you can learn to do!

If you’d like to present a program, please talk to an officer at a meeting.
