SVGMS Field Trip - National Limestone Quarry (Mt Pleasant & Middleburg PA)
The club took a trip to the National Limestone (Mt Pleasant & Middleburg PA), Saturday June 29th, 2019.
The Man at the quarry explained that he left a shot out specifically for the rockhounds because it was so packed with crystals. He didn’t charge anyone for entry but instead gave his testimony on being a believer in Jesus Christ.
We spent 2 hours at the Middleburg location digging mostly calcite and everyone was out punctually 2 hours later headed to the location near Mt. Pleasant.
When we got to the second location, my family went right up to the area where the wavellite is found. My son’s ended up enjoying finding fossils more than the wavellite!
One specimen a gentlemen found was a shell fossil formed from wavellite. We also found a smaller one of these.
We were not there 2 hours when a storm sprang on us and chased everyone out of the quarry.
I would have loved some more time in both locations and felt a bit rushed but I don’t think we could have fit anything else in our car anyway. Oh yeah, and it was a blistering hot day until the rain came!
