April 2014 Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the Meeting of Shenandoah Valley Gem and Mineral Society
April 14th, 2014
The meeting was called to order by Club President, Dean Hostetter. Attendance: 32 members and guests.
Old Business:
* Jack Glenn provided a handout for t-shirt design options. If you have any suggestions, let Jack know (jglenn52@gmail.com)
* Leonard Lance is still working to get access to various field trips with the Kentucky Rock and Mineral Club.
* Jilly Weigel discussed her previous workshop and upcoming (April 19th, 2014) workshop on “How to Wire Wrap a Cabochon”.
New Business:
*Lengthy discussion held and options discussed to move the club show to The Augusta Expo the last weekend in September, September 26th - 28th, 2014. Cost would be approximately $1000 per day but we will have reduced costs for table rental, more vendor space and improved advertising, etc. Motion made and approved to relocate to The Augusta Expo. Dean and Scott will further investigate what is required and any potential obstacles.
*Nothing spectacular found during the field trip to the Dixie and Kelly-bank mines, but still fun to get out and collect.
*Leo Cloutier can open the rock club work shop on possibly the 3rd Saturday of the month. Interested folks should contact Leo: lecloutier@gmail.com

Program Report:
“Fluorescent Minerals of Virginia” presented by Mary Loose DeViney.
Mary started with a brief definition of fluorescence (visible light produced by certain minerals and fossils when these objects are illuminated by light rays of a UV light source (black light).
Mary emphasized what can be collected in Virginia, with numerous slides of locally collected minerals.
She also discussed how to photograph fluorescent minerals and the difference between safe UV (long-wave) and short wave portions of the light spectrum.
Several folks went home with the idea of checking their collections for fluorescence and investing in a black light.
Thanks, Mary!
