September 2015 Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Meeting of Shenandoah Valley Gem and Mineral Society
Meeting date: September 14th, 2015

Intro:
There were 17 members and 4 visitors present. Our President, Michael Pabst, called the meeting to order. He also provided refreshments for us.

Old Business:
As suggested at the last meeting, a new lamp was installed above the Genie. The club also purchased six new 6” wheels, which will be installed as soon as possible.

Updates for the show on 18-20 were noted: we are up to 19 vendors, which is a huge increase from 8 when the show used to be at Kate Collins Middle School.

There will be no food provided by the church ladies this year. Everyone was reminded to sign up to help and to bring a food dish for the vendor meal on Friday night.

Debbie Grimm has contacted the county teachers about giving extra credit for students that attend and provided a scavenger hunt.

There will be a sand box provided for the children to find real “gems”.

New Business:
The next rock shop opening will be in October, due to the show being on the regular date.

Program Report:
Mike provided some sample displays which were simple, yet impressive. Rather than display expensive minerals, photos with explanations could be used.

Have a theme box – show jewelry and list the minerals with descriptions and locations. Include photos of family members who are interested in collecting. Do a theme of a certain area of the US or VA minerals.

October: Open. Perhaps we will have a discussion and some pictures of minerals from the Dixie Mine at Vesuvius Virginia.

November: Scott Duresky will talk to us about the Rutherford Mine, one of the most interesting pegmatite mines in Virginia
