November 2012 Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the Meeting of Shenandoah Valley Gem and Mineral Society
November 12th, 2012

The meeting was called to order by Club Vice President, Scott Steele. 19 Club members and 2 guests were present.

The selection committee nominated and the club approved by motion the following officers for 2013:

  • Dean Hostetter – President
  • Leo Cloutier – Vice President
  • Bob Helt – Secretary
  • Scott Gregory – Treasurer

Jack Glenn stated he has started working on the revisions to the club’s web site. Details to be worked out and some funds will be needed.

Guest speaker was Club Member Mary Loose DeViney, who presented a talk on "The Geology of the Building Stones of Downtown Charlottesville”. Mary put this presentation together as one of the featured speakers for the 250th anniversary of Charlottesville. The presentation included photographs of buildings, parks, and statues in Charlottesville to include rocks and minerals used in construction, building history, and possible quarry sites. I saw several folks taking notes which is quite unusual for a quest speaker. Mary spent a year researching the data for this presentation which was evident by the detail and in-depth information she presented. Thanks Mary.

This is our annual Christmas/Holiday dinner meeting. REMINDER THE DINNER STARTS AT 6:30 PM. Please arrive a little earlier so that we can start at 6:30!

Traditionally, we have a gift exchange of something in the $5 range. Gift participation is optional, but you must bring a gift to receive one. Anything hobby related, food, etc. Please mark the gift as suitable for a male, female or either recipient. Gift exchange will be handled by Leo Cloutier.

Plan to attend as we always have loads of fun. Dress is informal but the conversations are deep.

ACTION: We need a head count for the dinner. At the meeting I got a total of 14 members who planned to attend. Subsequently I received 4 additional folks (Charles and Thelma; Leonard and Pat). Please send me an email ASAP if you plan to attend and were not at the meeting or have changed your plans. (Bob Helt: heltsncrozet@comcast.net)
