2019 Gem, Mineral & Jewelry Show Review
The 2019 Gem and Mineral show was a great event, enjoyed by hundreds of Valley gem & mineral fans, students & kids.
Attendees were treated to many attractions, including:
- Exhibits from SVGMS members & vendors illustrating the beauty & fascinating aspects of the rocks & minerals found in the Shenandoah Valley & around the world
- Minerals, gems & hand-crafted jewelry offered for sale by vendors from the Shenandoah Valley & beyond (Hint - Get your Christmas shopping done early!).
- A fossil display that tracks the occurrence of fossils through the major geological epochs.
- A ‘treasure hunt’ for the wee folks - let the kids hunt for actual gem materials!
- Gem mining using a sluice to discover gem materials in ‘pay dirt’
- Check out the fascinating world of micro-minerals - Be surprised how many spectacular crystals and beautiful sights are hidden on seemingly ordinary specimens.
- Ever wanted to see how mineral spheres get made? Check out the process firsthand from a club member who specializes in sphere-making!
- A cabochon creating demonstration & discussion area - See how YOU can make polished pieces for lapidary jewelry!
- A wire-wrapping demonstration area - once you have some rocks and can do lapidary with them, this comes next!
- Door prizes contributed by our vendors & members drawn for hourly Saturday & Sunday
Our extensive thanks to Scott Gregory (show chairman) and the crew of club volunteers for pulling everything together. Numerous club members supplied the ‘sweat equity’ for setup, breakdown and the myriad tasks that go into making the show a pleasure for Valley families to attend year after year.
Thanks also go out to the many vendors who donated door prizes for the lucky attendees who won them. The vendors outdid themselves this year with their creative wares & hard-to-resist bargains!
The 2020 Gem & Mineral Show will be the 53rd annual production of this event and promises to continue the success of 2019 as we continue in our larger venue & maintain the extended hours the show is open. Please plan on joining us the third weekend of September, 2020!
